Workshops and Presentations for Adults
Through the sharing of information about our unique wildlife, and how we can avoid many of the common reasons they need rescue and care, our community will be inspired and empowered to support biodiversity and amazing local animals. Participants leave with practical solutions and ideas they can start using immediately.
We have a range of workshops and presentations tailored to considering wildlife’s perspective when it comes to many of our life choices and home gardens.
They are ideal for organisations facilitating or considering starting a ‘Victorian Gardens for Wildlife’ Program or anyone just interested in providing habitat and living in harmony with wildlife.
We present to community groups such as Probus, Rotary and Lions Clubs or any group interested in our unique Australian animals.
Presentations
Choose from four different presentations that generally run for 45 minutes. We suggest you allow an hour to provide time for questions. Running time can be adjusted to suit your time frame.
1. Wildlife Considerations
When making changes to your garden it is important not to disadvantage the wildlife already living there. This presentation looks at common reasons wildlife come into care following backyard rescues.
It explores some of the disadvantages and dangers yards can present and how the home owner has many alternatives to better consider the needs of wildlife.
This presentation focuses on wildlife already visiting your property and is ideal for:
organisations hosting the ‘Gardens for Wildlife’ program
local garden enthusiasts who are about to make changes to their gardens.
2. Wildlife Friendly Gardening
Want to attract and support wildlife in your garden? Wildlife friendly gardens are good for our health, they connect us to nature as well as support native animals and biodiversity.
This presentation is ideal for 'Gardens for Wildlife' facilitators and anyone wanting a wildlife friendly garden but not sure where or how to start. From planning your wildlife friendly garden to selecting plants our tips come from the wildlife’s perspective and can;
Participants will be inspired and empowered with practical ways to support wildlife’s four basic needs. They will leave with ideas and solutions to adopt immediately at home to help them live in harmony with, and provide habitat, for wildlife.

3. Habitat Boxes for Suburban Wildlife
The what, why and how of choosing and installing a habitat box for local species are covered in this presentation.
There are many reasons to put up a habitat box such as habitat enrichment, and to support and increase biodiversity. 20% of Australian wildlife need a hollow to nest or den in. Hollows can take 100 years to form and many species, such as kookaburras, parrots and cockatoos according to Bird Life Australia, are in decline because suitable hollows to breed in aren’t available.
Other species, such as possums, find it hard to find a hollow to den in and can end up in roofs and sheds.
Following this presentation participants will be able to;
Tips to increase the likelihood of the box being utilised and how to avoid it being taken over by feral species are also covered.
4. About Living with Wildlife
This presentation is ideal for volunteer and community groups such as Probus who wish to hear about the educational partnership ‘Living with Wildlife’

Wildlife Conundrums
Does your community group need a guest speaker with a difference?
We deliver 20 minute fun and factual presentations, discussing dilemmas and solutions for wildlife conundrums such as –
Depending on the time you have available, book one or more of our Wildlife Conundrum talks. They are ideal for Lions, Probus and Rotary clubs or anyone looking for a guest speaker with an environmental, wildlife or gardening theme that is just that bit different and sure to entertain.
Prices
As volunteer Wildlife Shelters we understand and value the work of community groups. We will work with your budget or accept a donation.
We require equipment to run PowerPoint. We can provide a laptop if needed.
Wildlife Friendly Gardening Workshop
This workshop is available as a basic 2 hour, or more comprehensive 3 hour, workshop.
a. Two Hour Workshop
Is ideal for anyone wanting to attract and support wildlife but not sure where, or how, to start. Our wildlife friendly gardening tips come from the wildlife’s perspective. They can be incorporated into any sized garden, on any budget and will provide habitat.
Included in the basic workshop are;
Included are plant displays, information leaflets and the opportunity to interact and have questions answered.
b. Three Hour Workshop
If you want to learn about habitat (aka nest) boxes and more in-depth information on the above then the 3 hour workshop is the one for you!
The 3 hour workshop expands on the information in the 2 hour workshop as well as including a section on identifying appropriate habitat boxes to install to support your local hollow users.
Participants will be able to decide where they can place a habitat box and what species of box/s to choose for their location. Where to place the box, and how to attach it, are also covered as well as tips to avoid it being taken over by feral species.
This workshop includes plant, weed and habitat box displays, information leaflets and the opportunity to interact and ask questions.
